Once Upon a Mad Hatter's Day Off

Mad Hatter's Day Off is a short story I started writing a year into the pandemic.

I was relating a ton to the whole topsy turvy Alice in Wonderland vibe, and I had this nagging ache in my gut missing my elderly friends and thinking about what a wildly lonely time it is to be out of one's mind...

It isn't a cheerful story, per se, but it is designed to be both delightful and healing. It was nostalgic and soothing to write, and the sad bits felt a little bit like landing, finally, after floating in the air for far too long. I hope it hits you like a cup of homemade soup and a warm fuzzy blanket on a rainy day.

"Whimsical and thought-provoking!"

Twisted and retold fairytales by Jessica Bird

“Aren’t you a teensy bit curious?”

I could hear the smile in Mary Mouse's voice, she always knew the magic words.

It worked. Despite my dread of being alone in a crazy old man’s cluttered home for an hour, I was curious.

And she was right, it was a good story. Perhaps the only story worth telling this week. The paper needed this. And so, I found myself calling on the Hatter, and making my way to his home this morning.
